Scottish League Cup 2nd Round Preview

Tuesday, August 25th, 2009

There’s three SPL teams in action this evening, in a round that proved too much for Hearts and Hibernian last year: the Edinburgh teams where knocked out at this stage by Airdrie and Morton respectively.

While Morton get another chance to play giant killers when they travel to Kilmarnock, Airdrie United lost to Alloa in the previous round. Alloa’s reward is a home tie against SPL side Dundee United.  The only other SPL side in tonight’s round are Hamilton, who travel north to Dingwall and their game with Ross County.

Elsewhere there’s an all First Division tie with Partick Thistle and Queen of the South meeting in Glasgow. Both these sides recorded big-scoring wins over lower league opposition in the previous round: Queen of the South eased past the Corinthians of Queen’s Park 4-1; Partick Thistle won 5-1 at home to the Wee Rangers, Berwick.

Third Division Forfar are at home to neighbours Dundee. In the last game of this evening, Inverness Caley, who played out that thrilling 2-2 draw with fellow title-contenders Dundee at the weekend are at home to Albion Rovers.

On Wednesday evening, while Celtic are hoping to overturn a 2-0 deficit at the Emirates against Arsenal, the second batch of teams in this round play out their games.

The tie of the evening is the all First Division clash between early league leaders Dunfermline and newly promoted Raith Rovers.

The three SPL teams playing tommorow night include Hibernian, who take on Brechin City and St. Mirren, who will play another newly promoted side Ayr United. The Honest Men have not had the best of starts to life in the First Division, having so far two points; their loss to Morton at the weekend has them second-bottom of the division.

St. Johnstone, the last of the SPL clubs taking part in this round are away to Arbroath.

The next round of games will be played Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23 September, when the six European qualifiers enter the competition, including the current League Cup holders, Celtic. They beat Rangers 2-0 in last years final.
