The Ballbag – Arsenal v Celtic

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

Tonight, Celtic aim to do the practically impossible and overturn a two-goal deficit away at Arsenal, and so book themselves into the group stages of the Champions League.

Having read various web sites previewing this game, there’s not one blogger out there that gives Celtic anything more than hee-haw chance of getting through, let alone get a result.

Let’s be honest and get this out of the way: Celtic will not win this game.

Arsenal are a side brimming with confidence, having got off to a flyer in the league. The 2-0 defeat of Celtic at Parkhead was sandwiched between a 6-1 demolition of Everton and a 4-1 destruction of Portsmouth.

Celtic have not exactly been shabby either in the goal scoring department. The 3-0 win at Aberdeen was followed by a seven-goal thriller against St. Johnstone, so, like Arsenal, Celtic are going into this game on a high, despite being two goals down before a ball is even kicked.

The form comparisons are all very well, and admittedly, Portsmouth are a poor side this season and Everton are having a ‘mare of a time of it as well, losing to Owen Coyle’s Burnley, but neither of these two sides should be easily dismissed: on their day, they’d give most SPL sides a run for their money.

And even without captain Cesc Fabregas, Arsenal are simply awash with talent: Van Persie, Eboue, Arshavin, Gallas, Denilson, Clichy. The list goes on.

So, what is the point of this post?

The point is this: when the final whistle goes on this game, I hope that none of my fellow bloggers write scathing articles about the state of Scottish football. God knows we’ve had enough of those already this week.

Celtic will still be in Europe, they’ll still be flying the flag for Scottish football. Arsenal are not Artmedia Bratislava. Arsenal are no FBK Kaunas, or FC Vaduz or Sigma Olomouc. There will be no shame to suffer, no crisis to have caused, and no country to have let down.

It’s just one team, beaten by a better team. That’s football. That’s all it is. No more, no less.

Alright Chick?

Scottish Football Midweek Round-up

Wednesday, August 19th, 2009

Jings, crivens, help ma boab, it’s Wednesday already. The off-season has been going by so slowly that the start of the new league season has caught me by surprise.

And I am glad it’s started. Well, I was until Aberdeen started playing competitive games and ended up shaming the entire north-east back into our crofts. Three games played so far, 11 goals conceded, 2 scored. But there’s no reason to panic, after all, we have a legend at the helm. And don’t forget, we had a bad start to the season last year too, and look where we finished.

So next week we play Hamilton, a sure-fire 3 pointer I reckon. Never mind they beat us last season at this stage also, we’ll gloss over that.

It completely escaped my notice, but the team that struggled to get past the Dons 8-1 on aggregate, Sigma Olomouc, are drawn against shit English side Everton in the first of the Europa League group games later on this week. I’m hoping Everton get a similarly thorough tanking (which is not unfeasible given their own stuffing by Arsenal last week), to prove once and for all that Scottish teams are no worse than English teams (note heavy sarcasm).

Celtic tried to prove that last night against Arsenal, but a combination of dodgy refereeing and Gary Caldwell prevented that truth to be proven once and for all, so we’re just going to ignore that result completely. And I do admit we where perhaps a little over-optimistic in our preview of this game yesterday, but hey, why not big-up Scottish football for once? No one else seems to be doing it.

Also in the group along with Everton and Sigma Thingy are Hearts, the team we’re tipping for third spot in the league this year. They’re taking on a team we once used to have in Subbuteo format – Dinamo Zagreb.

Unlike Hearts, Dinamo are the most successful team in their respective country, ehm, Croatia I think, having won lashings of league titles and shiny silverware. On paper then, expect another classic display of Scottish football at it’s best, considering that Hearts couldn’t even get past Dundee United yesterday.

Meanwhile, over in another corner of Europe, spare a thought for dear Fort William.

For years, the gashest team in senior football had carved out a little niche of terribleness, attracting attention from all corners of the globe, all drawn like flies to a pile of shit to one of the far posts of the Empire – Lochaber – to see for themselves the depths to which Scottish football has plumbed.

But they’ve suddenly got competition for all that media attention that nearly brought large-scale investment from the US: it turns out there’s a team that’s possibly even worse than Fort William.

Grantown-on-Spey side Strathspey Thistle where one of the three teams along with Turriff United and Formartine United promoted from obscurity in the north-east Junior leagues to semi-obscurity in the Highland League last season. So far, their campaign has not exactly got off to a flyer, something which cant be said for the teams that have had the pleasure to play them so far.

In their three games since the season started, Strathspey have conceded a whopping 19 goals, six more than Fort William. On opening day, Strathspey went down 8-1 to Wick Academy, with all the goals coming in the first half, an average of a goal every five minutes, roughly. In their next fixture, their first Highland League fixture on home soil, things got a little better against powerhouse Inverurie, the damage being restricted to only 3 goals. However, it was business as usual the following week when the other football team in Inverness, Clachnacuddin score eight times without reply.

All this makes for an unfamiliar picture: Fort William are no longer propping up the bottom of the table! Quite how long this will last will remain to be seen, but put a mark in your calendars for 28 November when these two giants of the scoreboard meet up!

Livingston finally played their first league game since they emerged out of bankruptcy. The SFA decided to refuse Livi’s desperate attempts at getting themselves re-promoted back into the First Division and upheld their decision to keep the team in the Third Division, a move designed to ensure the club’s long term survival. Or something. I’ve never quite understood how relegating a club one division, let alone two can in any way help a club that’s just struggled to get out of bankruptcy.

Livi where never a huge crowd-drawer in the First division, but down in the Third, when only 632 people turned up to watch game against Montrose, your crowds are going to be massively down, resulting in less income and sponsorship. And this loss of income will just more pressure on the club to survive in already difficult circumstances.

And just to really kill of Livi, the SFA may yet impose further penalties on the club because they refused to play their season-opener against East Stirlingshire. A 15 point deduction has been suggested, something which they’ll no doubt overcome, but it’s a little like getting a spear through the chest, only to discover a gas bill at the end of it. Madness, I tells ye.

So, what is there to look forward to in next week’s fixture list?

Though the tie between Celtic and new boys St. Johnstone looks tasty, without a doubt, the game of the weekend is Sunday’s SPL clash between Rangers and Hearts. Rangers have been suspiciously quiet so far in terms of transfers, but their casual demolition of Falkirk last week set out their intent to chase Celtic all the way this season.

In the First Division, two sides who we reckon will fight it out for promotion this season meet, as Dundee take on Inverness Caley Thistle. Cowdenbeath wont have to travel far to take on Alloa, and down in the Third Division we have the first Angus derby of the season when Forfar travel to Montrose.

3 reasons why Celtic not only have to win, but will win tonight!

Tuesday, August 18th, 2009

Ahead of tonight’s (excuse the cliché) Battle of Britain between Celtic and Arsenal (the first time these sides have met), and in the absence of any in depth review of the game, here’s three reasons why Celtic not only have to win tonight, but will win tonight!

1: They have to restore pride in Scottish football…

Scottish football has taken something of a battering of late.

The much-maligned Scottish game has suffered a series of damaging fiasco’s. The list includes TV stations going bust, the kit provider to the national side, several teams on the verge of bankruptcy, not to mention complete howlers of results for both our domestic sides (Aberdeen’s and Falkirk’s disgraceful exit from European competition) as well as our national side (Scotland getting rode 4-0 by otherwise shite Norway).

So, no pressure Tony, but to restore a little bit of pride, not mention credibility to our game north of the border, it’d really help if you gave Arsenal a thorough going over.

2: They will prove that super-rich, multi-million pound teams don’t always win the big games…

A wise man once said that in the land of the blind, the one-eyed man is king. In the case of Scottish football, it’s more a question of the very rich man being king. That’s true everywhere these days, but never more so than in Scotland.

In a league dominated by two giants – two very rich giants – Celtic and Rangers rule the roost, with the rest of the league inconvenient fodder on the way to another year of total Old Firm domination.

The combined spending of both Celtic and Rangers during this off season, or, for that matter the combined cost of both Celtic and Rangers first teams is probably no more than the Arsenal team taking the field tonight.

The Celtic side which faced Aberdeen on Saturday and which won so easily cost less to put together, around £20m, than the cost of either Andrey Arshavin or Thomas Vermaelen, two of Arsene Wengers more recent acquisitions.

Of course, this is all relative.

The amount of money that Arsenal needs to spend to compete with Manchester United, Chelsea, Liverpool and new kids on the block  Manchester City is simply vast. To even have a hope staying in the top 4, never mind breaking into the top 4 of the English league would require investment on the scale that would make even Bernard Madoff think twice.

Celtic on the other hand only have Rangers to compete with, so bringing in Marco-Antoine Fortune and Danny Fox for a combined total of £5m represents considerable investment from the Glasgow side. Investment which will once again ensure they’re streaks ahead of the rest of the league.

On ledger paper alone, Arsenal will walk this game. But stranger things happen at sea, which you’ll understand once we explain why Celtic will win tonight …

3: Celtic will win because they have a great record at Parkhead against English sides…

So yes, Arsenal are good and they trashed Everton (the English equivalent of mid-table fodder and perennial also-rans Hibernian) and they once went a season without losing and they have a lot of good players who cost trillions, not to mention a rather swanky stadium, but there’s something about Celtic that Arsene Wenger and his millonarios needs to bear in mind.

There’s a story going around, a belief if you will, that because Celtic play in a diddy league against diddy teams, that any serious challenge from teams across Hadrian’s Wall (i.e., the other part of Britain) has Scottish fans and pundits shrugging their shoulders, ready to accept the inevitable drubbing the Hoops will get.

But a close look at the record books shows a different story. While Celtic’s away record in European competition against English sides is not exactly tremendous, at home in Parkhead, it’s quite a different story:

Since Celtic first took part in European competition, they’ve faced English opposition on several occasions and have, somewhat surprisingly, done rather well:

2008 Champions League    Celtic    1-1    Manchester United
2006 Champions League    Celtic    1-0    Manchester United
2002 UEFA Cup            Celtic    1-0    Blackburn Rovers
2003 UEFA Cup            Celtic    1-1    Liverpool
1997 UEFA Cup            Celtic    2-2    Liverpool
1970 European Cup        Celtic    2-1    Leeds United
1966 Cup Winners Cup     Celtic    1-0    Liverpool

On only one occasion, the 1983 game against Nottingham Forest, did Celtic lose a home game against English opposition.

And not just that: consider that AC Milan and Juventus also lost at Parkhead. In fact, Dinamo Moscow where the last European team to win at Parkhead, and looked what happened to them in the second-leg. So, Celtic have history on their side when it comes to English opposition at Parkhead.

Given all that, we’re backing Celtic to win tonight and do Scotland – and Scottish football – proud. We confidently predict they’ll win 2-1 tonight.

Just don’t ask about the return leg at the Emirates..
