This Sunday at Easter Road, Hibernian take on Celtic for the second time this season, no doubt hoping to avenge the 4-2 defeat back at the end of October. Nearly 36 years ago to the day, it was the turn of Hibernian to emerge as victors in this fixture, when the Hibees recorded a memorable 2-1 win over Celtic in the Scottish League Cup Final at Hampden Park. In front of over 71,000 supporters, Hibernian, captained by the great Hibs legend Pat Stanton (who in 1976 would himself join Celtic) saw their team record a narrow victory over Celtic, the goals coming from Stanton and Jimmy O’Rourke. Kenny Dalglish scored for Celtic.
The win was in itself sweet revenge for the terrible 6-1 defeat Celtic inflicted on Hibernian in the previous seasons Scottish Cup Final, when three goals by John “Dixie” Deans, two by Lou Macari and one by Billy McNeill in front of over 106,000 at Hampden saw Celtic lift the trophy.
Hibernian where being managed by Eddie Turnbull, while Jock Stein was still in charge at Parkhead. The defeat at Hampden would not last long however for Celtic -- they went on to win the League by a single point from Rangers, with Hibernian a distant 12 points behind in third place.
